Florida has more invasive species than almost anywhere else on earth. It is the kind of fact that sounds like an exaggeration until you look it up.

Issue 8 explores what it means to share a city with species that were never supposed to be here, and what happens when you start paying attention to them. From the iguanas that fall from trees during cold snaps to the pythons reshaping the Everglades, Miami is living with consequences that are easier to ignore than to solve.

Also inside: Ryan Wheelbarrow on delusion as a creative tool, a piece by Marcos Cappa of Fanzine Puerto Rico on Chef D’Carlo (the Puerto Rican chef, hunter, and one-woman army turning invasive species into culinary experiences across the island) an “In Their Own Words” feature with Uncle Scotchy, Serci Cox’s drawing column, a recipe from Read It & Eat It, an interview with Miami artist Lee Pivnik on cleaning Biscayne Bay one sculpture at a time, and an “On Our Radar” spread on Penelope Gottlieb, whose Invasive Species series layers John James Audubon’s 19th-century bird prints with the invasive botanicals he never painted.

Submissions

We are currently accepting submissions for the following issues:

November, Issue 8 - Invasive Species (Closed)
December, Issue 9 - Miami Art Week (Closed)

March, Issue 12 - Migratory Stress

We welcome essays, personal narratives, poetry, illustration, photography, and comics. Work does not need to address the issue topic directly; it needs to feel resonant with it.

Respect for all opinions and differences is a core value of this publication. Letters From Miami is not a political magazine; the focus is always on the art around the topic, not political views. Content that violates this premise will not be considered.

Format & Specifications:

Written submissions should be sent as a Word document or PDF. Visual work should be submitted at a minimum of 300dpi in PNG, Flat PDF, or high-resolution JPG format. Each contributor receives a two-page spread, with the possibility of four pages with prior approval.

This is currently a non-paid opportunity.

All contributors receive full credit in the published issue, including name, website, and social handle and a few printed copies to share.
